Gearing up for Baby during Pregnancy

A stroll through a baby store can leave any pregnant women hyperventilating. There is a vast sea of baby products on retail shelves with large price tags to match. There are two major areas that women should focus their wallets on during pregnancy.

Of all the items you may want or need, a car seat needs to be first on the list. This device is the best way to keep your baby safe in the car. It is a legal requirement in many countries; including Canada and the United States. Pregnant women should look into the specific legal guidelines for car seats in their own regions.

There are several different car seats on the market. A carrier car seat is used for infants that weigh less than twenty pounds. These seats have a base that stays in the car and the seat can be removed as needed.

Many parents enjoy the convenience of moving baby without having to take them out of the carrier. Carriers work best when baby is small. Once baby nears the twenty pound mark, the carrier gets much harder to haul around.

Once the baby has reached 20 pounds, parents will need to upgrade to a standard, forward facing car seat. Some parents forgo the carrier and choose a convertible car seat. This type can be used as both a rear and forward facing car seat. Most of these seats are rated for children from five to sixty-five pounds.

Once baby is home, they will need a place to sleep. Some parents start their babies off in bassinets. Pregnant mothers who decide to breastfeed usually enjoy having the baby near-by. Baby will grow out of a bassinet quickly, so parents should have a crib on hand.

Pregnant women who go crib shopping are often startled by the price tags. New cribs can cost anywhere from a few hundred dollars to a few thousand dollars. Even used cribs at baby resale shops are still expensive.

When it comes to a crib, pregnant women should get the best crib that they can afford. They should not buy or borrow a used crib unless they are confident in it. A quality crib can be a good lifetime investment. Most cribs will convert to daybeds and twin beds as the child grows.

When it comes to gearing up during pregnancy, expectant parents can spend a lot or a little money. Car seats and cribs are two areas that parents should focus their efforts on choosing. A quality crib can make it through pregnancy and all the way to college.

Flying While Pregnant

There was a time when pregnant women were expected to stay close to home for the duration of their pregnancy. Times have changed and pregnant women can travel with ease to many places. If you are planning to fly, you will need to make some changes so your trip will be more comfortable.

It is always a good idea to check with your doctor before hitting the road. Your doctor can give you tips on how to handle problems while away, what foods to avoid and medications that are safe if you do get ill from travel. Check with the airline that you are flying with. Although rare, some airlines do have restrictions on what point in the pregnancy women can travel.

Give yourself as much time as you can. Try to schedule any layover or plane changes with at least a two hour delay. It is difficult to rush from terminal to terminal when you are carrying luggage and a pregnant belly. Breaks in the flight schedule will give you a chance to use the restroom, get something to eat and stretch your legs.

Flight delays happen to everyone. They are a pain but you shouldn’t stress over them. There isn’t anything that you can do and the stress isn’t good for either you or baby. Try to schedule your trip plans with possible delays in mind.

Try to get the aisle seat when booking your flight. This will give you a place to stretch out any leg cramps. It will also make it easier to the get to the restroom if nature or nausea calls. Bring along something to do just in case you can’t sleep on the flight. This will also help if your neighbor insists on telling you what you should and shouldn’t be doing during your pregnancy.

Most flights are short enough that you can stay in your seat for the duration. During longer flights, try to get up and walk about the cabin. Your swollen ankles will thank you later. Don’t avoid the airplane bathroom if you really need to go. These bathrooms may be hard to maneuver in but your bladder should get relief when it needs it.

Airlines have gotten cheap on the types of food they offer these days. They usually charge for any food items that you would actually want to eat. Be sure to bring your own supply of healthy snacks in your carry-on.

Whether you are traveling for business or pleasure, you should plan time into your schedule for breaks and relaxation. It is difficult, but necessary for you and your baby. Your pregnancy needs should come first when making any plans to hit the skies.

Parenting Classes

Parenting classes may seem like a strange idea. Previous generations never attended classes; they just winged it. There are actually many advantages that parenting classes can offer for expecting parents.

Parenting classes cover a variety of topics or can be very basic. Most hospitals offer at least a basic birth class that covers delivery and the first few weeks post delivery. Actual parenting classes offer a wide variety of information that covers topics like car seats to taking care of colds.

Most parenting classes offer hands on practice to parents. They utilize dolls to learn how to handle a newborn during baths, feeding and diaper changes. Parents-to-be will find this helpful especially if they have very little experience with babies. Parenting classes offer an excellent opportunity for expecting parents to ask a multitude of questions.

Parenting classes also give expecting parents a chance to meet other parents. Parenthood is a tough time and new parents often benefit by meeting friends who are going through the same changes. Building a network of friends and support can make the first few years of parenting a little easier.

Parenting classes come in a variety of styles and costs. There are classes that charge a fee for attendance, but there are also free classes available. Expecting parents can find parenting classes that meet any budget if they are willing to do some research.

As great as parenting classes are, they do have some disadvantages. Scheduling can be an issue. Most parenting classes try to cover a lot of information in a short period of time. This may make it difficult to fit into already packed calendars of soon-to-be parents.

Since the classes are scheduled so tightly, expectant parents may feel swamped with information. There may be little time to ask questions, get clarifications or explore areas that are particularly interesting. Expectant parents should try to talk with parents who have already completed the classes. This can give them an idea if the class is right for them.

Expectant parents who can fit in parenting classes to their life will find a plethora of information. Nothing can prepare expectant parents completely for parenthood. Parenting classes can help new parents answer a few of the never-ending questions and be a little more confident with their new arrival.

It is amazing what items a pregnant woman can obtain from her friends who already have kids. Clothes, toys, highchairs and playpens get grown out of quickly. Once a pregnant woman has all the baby gear, she will need to get it set up. This is a good time to enlist the partner or family members. Pregnant women need to be careful about painting. The fumes and the activity itself can be harmful to her pregnancy. She should leave painting and moving heavy objects to her partner if she can.
